A Working Field Trip
Spending a field trip working on an animal sanctuary farm to clean out barns, animal pens and pasture areas was a little different that a typical field trip. But the 16 Grand Island High School students, all members of the Interact club, learned quite a bit about the sanctuary and the stories behind each animal.
The volunteer work day at Asha Sanctuary, a farm animal refuge, in Newfane had students cleaning out the main barn, pig barn and back pasture. They also removed fencing that had been in place for spring and summer events. After their work was completed, sanctuary owner and director Tracy Murphy told them some of the animal's stories. The students got the chance to visit and interact with all the residents of the sanctuary including Albert the super cow. Laura Estenoz, a GIHS honors biology teacher and Interact adviser frequently volunteers at the sanctuary and organized the trip for students.
