GIHS Unified Basketball Hits the Courts for Second Season
It was all hugs and happiness as the Grand Island High School unified basketball team hit the courts to start its second season of practices.
Some showed up in the gym early to get time for extra shooting practice. As the players and partners walked through the doors to the back gym, they were all excited for the season and to see the friends they had made the previous year.
The icing on the cake was when alumni players Jesus Cisneros (Chuy) and Nick Payan showed up, returning this season as volunteer assistant coaches.
Soon enough it was time to get back to work with stretching, individual ball handling, some layups, full-court dribble series, and a game of dribble knock-out ensued.
Unified basketball at GICSD was started in the spring of 2018. The team is comprised of both students with and without disabilities, playing together in a regulation high school basketball game against other local schools. It is both fun and competitive but more importantly gives all students the chance to participate in something worthwhile and uplifting for everyone.
The GI team has four home and three away games leading up the playoffs. Here is the 2019 schedule:
Away – May 6 at 5 p.m. at Frederick Law Olmstead HS
Home – May 9 at 5 p.m. vs. Cheektowaga HS
Home – May 13 at 5 p.m. vs. West Seneca East HS
Home – May 15 at 5 p.m. vs. Iroquois HS
Home – May 16 at 5 p.m., Senior Night, vs. Akron HS
