Meet Dr. Rubie Harris

Dr. Rubie Harris In August, Dr. Rubie Harris began work as the Assistant Superintendent for Business and Finance with Grand Island Central School District. The Bridge asked her a few questions as a way to introduce her.

In what school districts have you worked? I began my career 8-1/2 years ago as the Junior Accountant at Niagara Falls City School Districts. In July of 2014 I received the position as Director of Business and Finance with Tonawanda City School District, and was with the district for four years before becoming appointed as the Assistant Superintendent for Business and Finance with Grand Island Central School District. 

What were some of the larger projects you helped move forward at those districts? I assisted with a possible consolidation at my last school district, introduced capital outlay projects, navigated a negative tax cap situation, worked with legislation to spread out a late filing penalty for an old capital project, worked to receive bullet aid for multiple endeavors, refunded debt and many other projects.

What's your educational background? I have my MBA in Accounting (2009). I completed my School District Business Leader Certification (2014) and completed my Ph.D. In Leadership and Policy (2017). I aspire to achieve my Administrator of School Finance and Operations which is a national certification through ASBO International.

What are you looking forward to at Grand Island? Truly becoming a Viking. Learning the community, district, culture and providing all I can to assist in identifying, prioritizing and growing the district. 

How would you describe your first months with the district? Welcoming! With beginning my position a week before the school year started, it can be chaotic. The central office and administrators were very welcoming, taking time to catch me up to speed on the multiple initiatives and providing support throughout the process.
