Kaegebein Fifth-Grader Organizes Donation Drive for Homeless
Kaegebein Elementary fifth-grade student Noah Borzellere recently came up with a project to help homeless people in the area. After he told the Kaegebein social worker, Ms. Cino, that his long-term goal was to be able to help homeless people when he was older, Ms. Cino replied, "Why wait?"
The two of them decided to partner with Family Promise of Western New York to set up a donation drive for Kaegebein faculty and staff to participate in. Noah's original goal was to collect one basket filled with new household supplies for a homeless family, but he ended up with five full baskets! Noah helped develop the game plan, create posters, met virtually with the executive director of Family Promise, put together the baskets, and loaded them into the vehicle to be delivered to their new homes.
The "Welcome Home" baskets are given to families moving out of the Family Promise shelter and into new homes. It helps them get a head start on all of the supplies that would generally belong in a new home (e.g. cooking supplies, cleaning supplies).
Family Promise is an emergency homeless shelter, which can house six families at a time. It is one of only two family shelters in Erie County that exist, since many shelters separate men from women and younger children. The goal of Family Promise is to keep families together throughout the crisis of homelessness.
