Grand Island Central School District Launches Secure Online CDL Hub to Support Bus Driver Applicants

Grand Island, NY — In response to the ongoing need for qualified school bus drivers, the Grand Island Central School District has launched a dedicated, password-protected section of its website to support applicants working toward their Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

The new hub, located within the district’s Transportation Department webpage, was created to better prepare prospective drivers for the New York State CDL Class B (PS) permit and road testing process. Visitors to the page can review relevant study topics — including:

  • General Knowledge and Driving Safety

  • Transporting Passengers

  • Air Brakes Fundamentals

  • School Bus Endorsement Knowledge

  • Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection

  • Basic Vehicle Control Skills

  • On-Road Driving Test Preparation

  • A downloadable CDL Class B (PS) Checklist tailored to the local process

While the materials are secure and accessible only to registered applicants, the goal is clear: provide structured, supportive resources that increase confidence and success rates.

Designed for All Learning Styles

Understanding that adults learn in different ways, the district intentionally developed the content in multiple formats to meet a variety of learning needs. The supplemental materials are broken down into:

  • Infographics that simplify complex CDL concepts into visual, easy-to-understand guides

  • Short instructional videos that walk applicants through key skills and knowledge areas

  • Podcasts and audio resources that allow learners to review content on the go

This multi-format approach helps reinforce essential topics such as general knowledge, passenger transport, air brakes, school bus endorsements, pre-trip inspections, and on-road driving expectations. By presenting the information visually, verbally, and in written form, applicants can engage with the material in the way that works best for them.

Supporting Success from Day One

Obtaining a CDL Class B license with passenger and school bus (PS) endorsements requires passing written permit exams and a skills-based road test. The district recognized that for many applicants, the testing process can feel overwhelming. By organizing the material into manageable, user-friendly segments, the Transportation Department aims to remove barriers and make the pathway to certification more accessible.

The password-protected system also ensures that applicants enrolled in the district’s training process receive focused, curated resources aligned directly with local expectations and state requirements. “We understand that taking the CDL Class B Permit test can feel stressful — especially if it’s been years since you’ve taken an exam.  You’re not alone,” said Grand Island Central School District Transportation Supervisor Theresa Alizadeh.

“At Grand Island CSD, we believe in preparing people for success — not just hiring them,” she added.

Investing in Recruitment and Retention

This new online learning hub is part of the district’s broader effort to recruit and retain high-quality bus drivers. By providing structured preparation tools and meeting learners where they are, the district is investing not only in workforce development, but in the safety and reliability of student transportation services.

Community members interested in becoming a bus driver for the Grand Island Central School District are encouraged to contact the Transportation Department at 716-773-8890, to learn more about training opportunities and how to access the CDL Class B (PS) preparation resources.
