Grand Island Athletics Earns Niagara Frontier League Sportsmanship Award

Grand Island High School Athletics has been recognized with the prestigious Niagara Frontier League (NFL) Sportsmanship Award, an honor that reflects the character, integrity, and respect demonstrated by Viking student-athletes, coaches, and spectators throughout the school year.

The award is particularly meaningful because it is determined through voting by opposing coaches and student-athletes from across the league. Following each varsity season, every Niagara Frontier League team completes sportsmanship ballots evaluating the schools they competed against. Coaches assess factors such as the quality of the host experience, interactions between coaches and officials, and overall professionalism. Student-athletes evaluate fair play, sportsmanship on the field, spectator behavior, and the conduct of opposing teams.

After ballots are collected and tabulated for each sport, one school is recognized as the most sportsmanlike program in that sport. Once all three athletic seasons and 23 league sports have been completed, the league combines the results to identify one school that exemplifies sportsmanship across its entire athletic program.

This year, that distinction belongs to Grand Island.

"Congratulations to all of our Grand Island coaches on earning the Niagara Frontier League Sportsmanship Award," said Director of Athletics Brett Banker. "This recognition is especially meaningful because it comes directly from the votes of opposing coaches and student-athletes throughout the league. The respect that others have for our programs is a reflection of the work our coaches do every day."

Banker credited Grand Island's coaching staff for fostering a culture that emphasizes respect, professionalism, and positive competition.

"Whether it's greeting opponents and officials before contests, handling difficult situations with professionalism, setting high expectations for behavior, or simply teaching our athletes how to compete the right way, our coaches continue to represent Grand Island with class," Banker said. "They show our student-athletes that it is possible to be competitive, support your teams, and still maintain positive and respectful relationships with opponents and officials."

In addition to the overall league honor, several Grand Island teams earned individual sportsmanship awards in their respective sports. Girls Swimming captured the award for the third consecutive year, while Boys Tennis, Boys Track, and Unified Basketball also received sport-specific recognition.

Banker noted that the commitment to sportsmanship extends beyond competition itself and helps create a positive environment for everyone involved in athletics.

"Those daily interactions and conversations matter," he said. "They have helped create a culture that others across the league recognize and appreciate. Thank you to our coaches, student-athletes, families, and supporters for continuing to make Grand Island Athletics something we can all be proud of."

The recognition serves as a testament to Grand Island's commitment to excellence not only in competition, but also in character.
