GISH Students Take First Place at Chalk Walk, Again!

The artistic talents of three Grand Island High School students, Julie Klein, Kelsey Mahoney  and Tess Lariviere, were recognized as they took first place at the Lewiston Art Festival Chalk Walk. This is the third consecutive year the GI high school team has earned a first place award.

The GIHS teams have been awarded first place honors 11 times since 1998. They have placed in the top three, 18 out of 20 contests with high school art teacher Megan Gaiek as coach. Mrs. Gaiek selects the students to be members of the team.

The competition was held Saturday (Aug. 12) on Center Street in Lewiston and Mother Nature did not cooperate. The girls battled rainy weather and sadly by the next day, most of their hard work had been washed away.

Their design featured Surrealist artists Frida Kahlo (left) and Salvador Dali (right). Although both artists came from different backgrounds and had distinct personal styles, they were connected through the Surrealist movement and their drive to create art that conjured up dreamlike images and subconscious thoughts.
