4th GRADE CURRICULUM
Reading: Emphasis is placed on developing reading skills in comprehension, critical thinking, vocabulary, and fluency. Various novels will be read aloud during class, as well as independently in class and at home. Reading skills and strategies will be addressed within the context of the literature, as well as specific reading skills materials and texts. Students must have a book to read in their desks at all times. A classroom library and school library provide ample access to needed materials. Students are expected to read 20 minutes each night.Language Arts: Students will be required to complete independent stories as well as specific writing assignments. The program is closely linked with reading. In addition, grammar skills will be addressed and practiced within the student's writing.
Spelling: Students will be given a list of words that will meet their individual needs and improve their skills. Tests will be given bi-weekly, and the words will be spelled within dictated sentences.
Math: We will be using a program called iReady Math this year. It is a fast-paced program that uses many manipulatives to help the students really understand math concepts. The methods that the students use to perform various operations may be unfamilar to you. Please feel free to utilize the programs website to access each lessons teaching video and text book pages that we used in class. Start reviewing your multiplication facts!!Social Studies: Students will apply the 5 themes of geography to study a region within the World and the influence it has on the life of the people. We will be researching how people live New York now, as well as in the past. Later in the year, we will research our Ethnic backgrounds and complete a Biography project.
Science: Human Machines, The Birth of Rocks, Waves of Sound, and Energizing Everything are among the units that we will be exploring.
New York State Testing: All 4th grade students are mandated to complete tests in the following areas:
- English Language Arts (ELA)
- Mathematics
